Lonneke van Tuijl is a Researcher at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Medical Sciences, affiliated with the Health Psychology department. Her work focuses on psycho-oncology, mental health, and the interplay between psychosocial factors and cancer incidence. She leads the PSY-CA consortium, investigating how depression, anxiety, and health behaviors relate to cancer risk through large-scale meta-analyses. Her recent findings challenge traditional theories linking mental health conditions to increased cancer risk, published in high-impact journals like International Journal of Cancer and Psychological Medicine. She also explores self-esteem dynamics in depression and anxiety recurrence, using implicit/explicit measures and longitudinal designs. Key projects include studies on cognitive biases in depression and interventions for Parkinson's disease patients.
Research interests span meta-analytic methods, health behavior mediation, and psychosocial epidemiology. Her work has garnered significant media attention, with over 70 news outlets covering her groundbreaking 2023 study refuting cancer-risk links to depression/anxiety. She collaborates internationally with institutions like the University of Cambridge and Erasmus MC.
