Dr. Lomarsh Roopnarine is a Professor and Assistant Graduate Coordinator in the Department of History and Philosophy at Jackson State University (JSU). He holds a Ph.D. (2002), M.A. (1997), and B.A. (1994) in Latin American/Caribbean Studies from the University at Albany, SUNY. His research focuses on labor migration, resistance, human rights, and social identity formation in the Caribbean, particularly examining Asian indentured workers and trans-Caribbean identities. He teaches courses such as World Civilization, Caribbean History, and Colonial Latin America.
His environmental research analyzes Guyana’s governance of its interior region and economic development. Current work explores intra/extra-regional migration and identity negotiation through globalization. He critiques traditional 'Creole identity' frameworks, proposing bi-structural national/trans-Caribbean identity models.
Publications include Indian Indenture in the Danish West Indies (2016) and Indian Migration and Identity Formation in the Caribbean (2018), addressing indentured labor systems and Caribbean ethnic dynamics.
