Dr Lois Orton is a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Sociological Studies at the University of Sheffield, with expertise in health inequalities and critical methodologies. She holds a PhD from the University of Manchester and has prior experience at the University of Liverpool. Her research focuses on marginalized groups such as Roma populations, asylum seekers, and ethnic minorities, exploring how structural inequities shape health outcomes. She leads the Wellcome Trust-funded project examining Roma health knowledge and collaborates on projects like the PROSPER psychosocial intervention for refugees. Her work integrates ethnography and policy analysis to challenge dominant narratives in public health. Teaching emphasizes critical approaches to health inequalities, complexity theory, and participatory methods. Recent grants include NIHR funding for studies on community empowerment and asylum seeker mental health support.
