Logan Brenner is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental Science at Barnard College, where she joined the faculty in 2019. She leads the Barnard College Paleo Environment Analysis and Reconstruction Lab (PEARL) and co-directs the NSF-funded Environmental Science Pathway Scholar Program (E(SP)2), which supports underrepresented students through mentorship and research opportunities.
Her educational background includes a B.A. in Geosciences from Skidmore College (2012), where she studied Yucatan stalagmites, and a Ph.D. in Earth and Environmental Sciences from Columbia University and Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, focusing on coral-based climate reconstruction in Panama and the Great Barrier Reef.
Professor Brenner's research integrates paleoclimatology and modern environmental science through geochemical analysis of biogenic carbonates. She reconstructs historical ocean conditions including sea surface temperature, precipitation patterns, and river discharge using coral cores from tropical Pacific sites, while also investigating coastal pollution through oyster studies and Hudson River Estuary ecosystems via foraminifera analysis. Her work bridges paleoclimate archives with contemporary environmental monitoring to address climate change impacts.
Her publication portfolio demonstrates consistent output in high-impact journals including Nature Communications, Marine Pollution Bulletin, and Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology, with research spanning coral geochemistry proxies, hydroclimate variability, and marine archive preservation. Recent work emphasizes interdisciplinary connections between paleoclimate data and modern environmental challenges.
She maintains active professional engagement through memberships in the American Geophysical Union, The Oceanography Society, and the Geological Society of America, frequently presenting at major conferences including the AGU Fall Meeting. Her science communication efforts extend to public lectures on climate change skepticism and policy advocacy.
As an educator, Professor Brenner teaches sustainable development workshops and senior thesis seminars while directing the E(SP)2 program. She emphasizes making science accessible and relevant, believing scientists must actively communicate findings to broader audiences and inform evidence-based policy decisions. Her lab provides immersive research experiences that connect historical climate data with present-day environmental management.
