Professor Liz Kelly serves as Professor of Sexualised Violence at London Metropolitan University's School of Social Sciences and Professions, directing the Child and Woman Abuse Studies Unit (CWASU) and holding the Roddick Chair on Violence Against Women. With four decades of pioneering work, she remains a leading international authority on gender-based violence.
Her academic credentials include a PhD in Sociology and a bachelor's degree in Sociology and Politics.
Kelly's research establishes critical frameworks like the 'continuum of violence' concept from her landmark book Surviving Sexual Violence. Her expertise spans sexual assault dynamics, domestic violence recovery processes, human trafficking mechanisms, and intersections between abuse and mental health. This interdisciplinary work bridges criminology, sociology, and social policy to inform frontline practice.
Her distinguished service was recognized with a CBE in 2000, while her policy influence extends through appointments like the Women's National Commission Board of Commissioners (2005).
Professor Kelly leads CWASU's research initiatives including the three-year longitudinal study tracking 100 domestic violence survivors, perpetrator program evaluations, and mental health violence briefings. Her advisory role shapes governmental responses to gender trafficking and equality frameworks.
She directs CWASU's multidisciplinary team conducting evidence-based research that directly impacts legislation and support services for abuse survivors.
