Liyao Chen is a Doctoral Candidate in Chinese and a PreDoctoral Instructor at the University of Washington's Asian Languages & Literature department. His research spans interdisciplinary fields including linguistics, grapholinguistics (study of writing), philology, and literature, with a focus on the borrowing and adaptation of the Chinese script in non-Chinese languages and the circulation of Chinese-language texts within the premodern East Asian 'Sinographic Cosmopolis.'
Education:
- M.A., East Asian Languages and Cultures, Columbia University, 2017
- B.A., History, Peking University, 2015
Research Interests: Chen's work examines the relationship between language and writing through two perspectives: (1) encoding spoken languages in written form, and (2) decoding written texts into spoken language.
