Dr. Liwei Zhang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA), affiliated with the College of Engineering. His research focuses on fluid dynamics, combustion systems, and propulsion technology, with a particular emphasis on rotating detonation engines, scramjet combustion, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). He has held roles including Research Engineer II and Postdoctoral Researcher at Georgia Institute of Technology's School of Aerospace Engineering before joining UTA in 2019.
Dr. Zhang holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Pennsylvania State University (2011) and a BS in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from the University of Science and Technology of China (2006). His work has been supported by grants from NASA, the American Chemical Society, and the University of Texas System, among others.
His research interests include the design and optimization of propulsion systems, CFD modeling of high-speed flows, and the application of machine learning in engineering. He has authored numerous publications in journals like AIAA Journal and Physics of Fluids, and his work has been recognized with awards such as the Rising STARs Award and selection for the National Academy of Engineering's Frontiers of Engineering Symposium.
Dr. Zhang actively engages in academic service, serving on doctoral dissertation committees, faculty search committees, and professional organizations like the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). He teaches courses in fluid dynamics, combustion, and gas dynamics at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
