Professor Lisa Russell is a Professor in Education and Employment at Manchester Metropolitan University and Editor-in-Chief of the Ethnography and Education Journal. Her work focuses on social justice, education policy, and interventions for young people at risk of becoming NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training). She leads the Leverhulme Trust-funded MINE project (2021–2026), analyzing early intervention programs for vulnerable youth. She has held grants from the ESRC, AHRC, and Leverhulme Trust, totaling over £350,000.
Education: PhD in Education (2005, Aston University).
Research Interests: Ethnography, social inequality, and policy impacts on marginalized youth. Her work emphasizes co-designing resources with communities, such as the Elective Home Educated Resource developed with families and Local Authorities.
Grants & Projects: Current projects include the MINE initiative and collaborations with organizations like the Youth Employment Group. She advises NEET Local Authority Networks and has co-authored policy recommendations.
Editorial & Leadership Roles: Editor-in-Chief of Ethnography and Education, co-organizer of the Oxford Ethnography and Education Conference, and member of the European Educational Research Association (EERA) Network 19. She has authored/edited books such as Ethics, Ethnography and Education (2022) and contributed to peer-reviewed journals.
International Engagement: Taught in England, Canada (University of Toronto), and Jamaica (University of the West Indies). Served as external examiner for UCL, Warwick, and other institutions.
