Lisa Austin is a Professor and Chair in Law and Technology at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law, and former Associate Director of the Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society (SRI). She holds a PhD in Philosophy and legal training from the University of Toronto.
Her research focuses on privacy law, property law, and legal theory, particularly addressing technological impacts, rule of law boundaries, and public vs. private data dynamics. Her work has significantly influenced Canadian jurisprudence, including Supreme Court rulings, and earned her the 2017 University of Toronto President Impact Award.
Lisa co-founded the IT3 Lab, an interdisciplinary initiative merging law and engineering to enhance digital transparency and accountability. Her current research explores broader data governance frameworks and the role of data intermediaries in regulating access to information ecosystems.
She has led efforts to build interdisciplinary communities around privacy issues at the University of Toronto and advocates for regulatory systems ensuring equitable social legibility in the data age.
