Liora Sion serves as Associate Professor in the Department of Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies at the University of Copenhagen's Faculty of Humanities, specializing in Israeli-Palestinian conflict dynamics through sociological and anthropological lenses.
Her research examines identity negotiation at conflict frontiers including interreligious marriages between Jewish women and Palestinian men, Palestinian men passing as Jews, and Jewish women acting as human shields for Palestinian insurgents. Current work analyzes UN agencies' roles in the conflict and Israeli soldiers' war songs as cultural indicators of enemy perception, bridging military sociology, gender studies, and Middle Eastern scholarship.
Recent publications (2023-2025) reveal evolving methodological approaches from ethnographic fieldwork to cultural artifact analysis, maintaining consistent focus on dehumanization mechanisms and identity fluidity within ethno-national conflicts while expanding into musical expressions of military culture.
Her scholarly recognition includes:
- Einar Hansen Research Foundation award (2022)
- Decoding Perspectives prize (2024)
- Between Ramallah and Tel Aviv UN Agencies research distinction (2020)
- Decoding Perspectives: enemy-making in intractable conflicts award (2024)
Dr. Sion actively shapes academic discourse through editorial work for Current Sociology and Middle East Critique, consultancy on interfaith marriage dynamics, and organizing workshops on Nordic humanitarian aid to Palestinians. Her 11 media contributions in 2024 demonstrate significant public engagement, particularly regarding Israeli military radicalization and conflict narratives.
