Linda Watkins is a Distinguished Professor in Behavioral Neuroscience at the University of Colorado, affiliated with the Psychology and Neuroscience Department and the Center for Neuroscience. She co-leads the Maier/Watkins Laboratory, a multidisciplinary research group focusing on adaptive responses to physiological and environmental challenges. Her research integrates molecular, cellular, and behavioral approaches.
Dr. Watkins earned her PhD in 1980 from the Medical College of Virginia. Her work explores immune-brain communication, glial regulation of neural function, and mechanisms underlying chronic pain, opioid analgesia, and stress-induced behavioral changes.
The Maier/Watkins Laboratory employs advanced techniques such as optogenetics, immunohistochemistry, and in vivo microdialysis. Current projects investigate stressor controllability, neuroinflammatory priming, and immune-mediated pain amplification. The lab’s facilities include surgical suites, behavioral testing equipment, and molecular biology tools.
While specific awards are not listed, her distinguished title reflects significant contributions to neuroscience. She collaborates extensively, with postdoctoral fellows specializing in diverse fields like immunology and pharmacology. Her research aims to develop novel strategies for chronic pain management and understanding brain-immune interactions.
