Lina Welz

Dr. Lina Welz is a Researcher at Kiel University with dual appointments at the Institute of Clinical Molecular Biology (IKMB) and the University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH) within the Department of Internal Medicine. She leads the Intestinal Immunometabolism research group focused on translational medicine.

Her research centers on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) pathogenesis, specifically investigating how microbial tryptophan metabolism influences intestinal immunometabolism. She pioneers therapeutic strategies targeting amino acid decarboxylase inhibition to restore microbial metabolic pathways in IBD patients, bridging molecular biology and clinical gastroenterology.

Dr. Welz serves as a key investigator in a DFG-funded Phase 2 clinical project titled "Restoration of Microbial Tryptophan Metabolism via Inhibition of Amino Acid Decarboxylase as a Novel Therapeutic Principle in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)", coordinating a multi-institutional consortium including Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel, Research Center Borstel, Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology, and Universität zu Lübeck.
