Lina SCALISI is a Full Professor of Modern History at the Department of Humanities of the University of Catania, where she has held academic and leadership roles since 2016. She is also President of the Academy of Fine Arts of Catania and has served on the scientific board of the Doctorate in History at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa. Her institutional affiliations extend across national and international research networks, including collaborations with universities in Spain, France, Romania, and Lithuania, as well as participation in major interdisciplinary projects such as GOST, PRIN, and PNRR initiatives.
Her research focuses on early modern European history, particularly the political and social dynamics of aristocratic elites, court cultures, and institutional frameworks within the Spanish domains of Italy. She has directed numerous research projects, coordinated international summer schools, and led cultural initiatives such as the development of the Museum of the City of Catania. Her scholarly contributions are deeply rooted in archival research, historiographical analysis, and public engagement with history.
Lina SCALISI's recent publications and research activities reflect a strong interdisciplinary orientation, combining historical inquiry with digital humanities, public policy, and cultural heritage. Her work spans topics such as emergency governance, transnational nobility, Mediterranean slave trade, and the role of queenship in early modern courts. She has also been instrumental in advancing digital archiving and historical documentation through initiatives like the DocStoLab and the Rivista Storica Italiana archive project.
Among her scientific distinctions are her election as Académica Corréspondiente of the Real Academia de la Historia (2015) and her role as ANVUR Coordinator for Area 11a (Historical, Philosophical, and Pedagogical Sciences, 2020–2022). She has also served as a referee for prestigious journals and editorial boards, further affirming her standing in the academic community.
In terms of academic mentorship and service, she has supervised numerous undergraduate and graduate theses on topics ranging from royal deaths to public history, and has coordinated educational programs and teacher training initiatives. She has also directed the Master in Historical, Archival, and Documentary Specialization and led the IMES Sicilia institute from 1998 to 2010. Her leadership extends to cultural programming, where she has ideated and coordinated lecture series, exhibitions, and interdisciplinary seminars, including those on political discourse, memory, and historical methodology.
She leads and participates in multiple research laboratories and collaborative groups, such as the Seminario permanente «La Italia española», the Centro del poder y cultura politíca de la monarquía de España en Barroco, and the international network El Manifesto de Pastrana. These teams focus on elite networks, political culture, and transnational aristocratic identities in early modern Europe. Her editorial leadership includes directing book series such as Storie e visioni, Storia e Storie del Mediterraneo, and Clio. Nuova collana di studi storici, as well as co-directing the journal MO.DO digitale.
