Lina Chhun serves as Assistant Professor in the American Studies Department at The University of Texas at Austin, with core faculty appointments in the Center for Women’s and Gender Studies and Center for Asian American Studies. She joined UT Austin in fall 2020 following her Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship at Stanford University.
Her academic credentials include:
- B.A.S. in Women’s and Gender Studies and Psychology from University of California, Davis
- M.S. in Social Psychology from University of California, Santa Cruz
- Ph.D. in Gender Studies from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)
Professor Chhun's research interrogates historical violence, war, and militarism through transnational feminist and queer frameworks, focusing on U.S. Cold War legacies in Southeast Asia and the Cambodian Holocaust. Her book manuscript Walking with the Ghost challenges trauma-centric narratives by analyzing memory production across archives, landscapes, and diasporic narratives, emphasizing Cambodian subjectivity beyond victimhood paradigms.
Her scholarly recognition includes:
- Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Humanities at Stanford University
She teaches graduate and undergraduate courses including Subjects/Racial Capitalism, Feminist Theory, and History of Southeast Asian Diaspora in the US. Professor Chhun maintains active advising commitments but declined new students for 2022-2023 due to current advising load, with office hours held Tuesdays 1:30-3:30 PM in BUR 414.
