Dr. Lila Braunschweig is an Assistant Professor of French Literature and Culture at the Department of Languages, Literature and Communication within the Faculty of Humanities at Utrecht University. She is also a research affiliate at the Institute for Cultural Inquiry (ICON). Her academic background includes a PhD in Political Science from Sciences Po (France) and postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Kent (UK), the Centre de recherche en éthique (Montreal, Canada), and Yale University (USA).
Her research focuses on social justice, gender politics, and queer theory, analyzed through French 20th- and 21st-century philosophy. Key research areas include gender neutrality policies, feminist critiques of legal frameworks, and queer pedagogical strategies. She is affiliated with the Institutions for Open Societies (IOS) research group, specializing in Gender, Diversity, and Global Justice.
Recent publications explore themes such as Roland Barthes' gender theory, ethics of discomfort in erotic discourse, and abolition of gender registration. Her book Neutriser: emancipation par le neutre (2021) argues for emancipatory potentials of gender-neutral practices.
