Liine Heikkinen is an Assistant Professor at Stockholm University's Department of Environmental Science, where she conducts research in the Atmospheric Science research group. Her work focuses on atmospheric aerosol particles and their complex interactions with clouds.
Her primary research interests include:
- How air pollution mitigation influences cloud properties and chemistry
- The response of the biosphere to changing environmental conditions and effects on the aerosol-cloud-climate system
- The life cycle and impact of atmospheric particles (aerosols) both indoors and outdoors
- Interactions between forests, carbon cycles, and climate change
Dr. Heikkinen conducts both field and laboratory research, primarily using online mass spectrometry to obtain real-time data on aerosol chemical composition. Her experimental work is complemented by instrumentation for measuring physical properties of aerosols and clouds. She incorporates observational findings into modeling applications to better understand cloud responses to aerosol variability.
Her ongoing CLIVE research project explores how forests in boreal and tropical regions influence climate change through interactions with carbon and water cycles, with particular focus on volatile organic compounds and biogenic aerosols.
