Liheng Cai is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Virginia, with courtesy appointments in Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Chemistry. His research focuses on soft (bio)materials and their interactions with biological systems, addressing challenges in sustainability and health through experimental and theoretical approaches.
Education includes a B.S. in Physics from Lanzhou University (2006), a Ph.D. in Materials Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2012), and postdoctoral research at Harvard University (2013-2017). He leads the Soft Biomatter Laboratory, emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration in polymers, advanced manufacturing, and bioengineering.
Research interests include polymers and soft matter, advanced (bio)manufacturing, and bioengineering. Notable achievements include developing voxelated bioprinting techniques and ultrasoft elastomers. Awards include the PECASE Award (2025), NIH MIRA (2024), and ACS Early Investigator Award (2024).
Teaching includes courses on Polymer Physics and Materials Science. His work integrates synthesis, theory, and translation to solve both fundamental and applied problems in materials science and biomedical engineering.
