Lih-Yuan Deng is a Professor of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Memphis, serving as Graduate Coordinator (Statistics). He holds a B.S. and M.S. in Mathematics from National Taiwan University (1971, 1975), an M.S. in Computer Science (1982), and a Ph.D. in Statistics (1984) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His research focuses on random number generation, simulation, cryptography, design of experiments, and statistical computing. He has authored/co-authored numerous books and papers in top journals, including the Annals of Statistics and Technometrics.
Key achievements include pioneering work on multiple recursive generators (MRGs), development of the DX random number generator family, and contributions to secure encryption via classical RNGs. He has received the 1994 Fellowship from NASS/USDA/NSF. Deng has mentored over 17 Ph.D. students and taught advanced courses in statistics, computer science, and data science.
He served as a Visiting Professor at UCLA (2002) and held roles at USDA/NASS. His grants include a $2.5M NSF/LDI grant (2019–2021). Active service includes editorial roles for Statistica Sinica and refereeing for journals like Biometrika. His work bridges statistics and computer science, with applications in bioinformatics, cybersecurity, and large-scale data analysis.
