Lieven Baele is a Full Professor of International Finance at Tilburg University and Head of the Finance Department within the Tilburg School of Economics and Management (TiSEM). His research focuses on Empirical Asset Pricing, International Finance, and Banking, with emphasis on financial integration, risk management, and macroeconomic regimes. He has held academic positions since 2004, progressing from Assistant to Full Professor in 2019.
His work explores extreme market stress events such as flights-to-safety and contagion spells, with publications in top journals like the Review of Financial Studies and Journal of Monetary Economics. He advises policymakers at institutions like the ECB and European Commission, and teaches courses on Global Asset Allocation, Risk Management, and International Corporate Finance.
Baele has supervised over a dozen PhD students, contributing to research areas including banking risk, macroeconomic regimes, and option pricing models.
