Libe Washburn

Libe Washburn is a Research Professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), affiliated with the Marine Science Institute (MSI) and the Department of Geography. His research focuses on coastal oceanography, particularly ocean circulation dynamics, phytoplankton blooms, and the impacts of physical processes on marine ecosystems. He chairs the Board of Governors of the Southern California Coastal Ocean Observing System (SCCOOS) and develops observational technologies like HF radar and aerial drones for coastal monitoring. Before academia, he worked as an aerospace engineer before pursuing graduate studies.

Research emphasizes integrating remote sensing (HF radar, gliders) with field experiments to study coastal circulation, larval transport, and ocean acidification. Key projects include the Santa Barbara Coastal Long Term Ecological Research (SBC-LTER) and collaborations with NOAA and NSF-funded initiatives. His lab innovates in drone-based payloads for water sampling and antenna pattern measurements, enhancing coastal data collection.

Washburn’s work addresses climate change impacts through studies of kelp forest resilience and ocean warming. He advises on ocean policy and collaborates with agencies on issues like harmful algal blooms and model validation. His contributions span over 50 peer-reviewed articles, advancing understanding of coastal-ocean interactions and technological advancements in marine observation.
