Dr. Lianne Urada is an Associate Professor at San Diego State University's School of Social Work and an Associate Adjunct Professor at UC San Diego's Division of Infectious Diseases & Global Public Health. Her work focuses on HIV/AIDS, substance use, human trafficking, and homelessness. She holds a PhD from UCLA and has conducted research globally, including in the Philippines, Mexico, Russia, and India. Dr. Urada is affiliated with multiple universities and colleges, including SDSU's College of Health and Human Services and UCSD's Center on Gender Equity and Health.
Her research spans over 50 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, emphasizing marginalized populations such as sex workers, homeless individuals, and victims of trafficking. Key areas include HIV prevention, substance use interventions, and gender-based violence. Dr. Urada has received grants from NIH, NIDA, and the Nemeth Foundation, among others. She teaches courses on community organizations and public health policy, mentoring over 30 graduate students in social work and public health.
Dr. Urada’s awards include the Torang Jahan Prize for Globalization Essays and a Meritorious Abstract Award from the Society of Behavioral Medicine. Her community initiatives, such as the 'Bupe by the Book' telehealth program addressing opioid addiction in libraries, reflect her commitment to bridging research and practice.
