Dr. Lian van Vemde is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Interdisciplinary Social Sciences department within the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences at Utrecht University. She is affiliated with both the European Research Centre on Migration and Ethnic Relations (ERCOMER) and the Interuniversity Centre for Social Science Theory and Methodology (ICS), working under Chair Lubbers on Migration, Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Relation.
Dr. van Vemde obtained her PhD in March 2025 with her dissertation titled 'Creating Inclusive Societies: Fostering Belonging and Positive Intergroup Relations in Culturally Diverse Classrooms.' Her educational background includes an MSc in Educational Sciences: Learning in Interaction (2017-2019) and a BSc in Academic Primary School Teacher Training from Utrecht University and Utrecht University of Applied Sciences (2013-2017).
Her research focuses on social dynamics in educational settings, particularly examining how schools, teachers, and classmates contribute to positive intergroup relations and feelings of belonging among culturally diverse student populations. Her work integrates quantitative methodologies including multilevel analysis, structural equation modeling, and eye tracking techniques. Current research investigates how young people perceive their own ethnic background and how these perceptions affect their school experiences and social relationships.
Her publications demonstrate a strong trajectory in social psychology of education, with increasing focus on cultural diversity, national belonging, and classroom dynamics. Her research has been published in reputable journals such as Teaching and Teacher Education, Social Psychology of Education, Journal of Youth and Adolescence, and Learning and Instruction, showing interdisciplinary reach across education, psychology, and migration studies.
Dr. van Vemde has developed practical tools for educators, including the Diversity Teaching Beliefs Scale and a reflection instrument for teachers working with diverse classrooms through the BLOK project (citizenship through teaching).
She possesses expertise in SPSS, MLwiN, Mplus, HLM, AMOS, and eye tracking technologies, applying these to analyze complex social dynamics in educational settings. Her research combines both explicit and implicit measurement approaches to understand ethnic attitudes and classroom social environments.
