Liam Riordan is the Adelaide and Alan Bird Professor of History at the University of Maine since 1997. Specializing in early American history (1760-1830), his research focuses on the Revolutionary era, non-textual sources, and interdisciplinary methods. He teaches undergraduate courses including HTY 103, HTY 240, HTY 461, and HTY 462, as well as graduate courses HTY 507, HTY 502, and HTY 601.
His research explores loyalism's trans-Atlantic dimensions, multicultural identities in the Delaware Valley, and post-Revolutionary economic adaptation of Glasgow merchants. Current projects include a comparative loyalist biography and a 2012 Fulbright-funded study on tobacco trade impacts.
Publications include The Loyal Atlantic (2012), articles in New England Quarterly, and humanities advocacy essays. Awards include Fulbright Scholar (2012).
Public history initiatives include organizing Maine's bicentennial events (2019-2020), directing the UMaine Humanities Center (2014-2016), and serving on the Maine Humanities Council Board (2010-2017).
