Liam Fanning

Liam J. Fanning is a Professor in Immunovirology at the Department of Medicine, University College Cork (UCC). He leads the Molecular Virology Diagnostic and Research Laboratory (MVDRL) and is an APC Microbiome Ireland Funded Investigator. He holds a PhD in Immunology (1992) and a DSc in Immunology and Virology (2017). His research focuses on viral pathogenesis and host immune responses, particularly in hepatitis C, HIV, HPV, and SARS-CoV-2. His work spans microbiome interactions in human and bovine systems, virology diagnostics, and cytokine signaling disruptions post-viral infections.

Research Interests: Immunovirology, Hepatitis C virology, Gut microbiome dynamics, Cytokine networks in chronic infections, Clinical diagnostics, and Host-pathogen interactions. Publications: Over 70 peer-reviewed articles highlight his contributions to virology, microbiome research, and infectious disease management. Key themes include SARS-CoV-2 immunity, hepatitis C therapy, and cytokine dysregulation in hospitalized patients.
