Lewis Topley is a Professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Bath. His research focuses on Lie algebras, representation theory, and algebraic groups, with a particular emphasis on topics such as W-algebras, modular representations, and noncommutative geometry. He has secured significant funding through grants including the UK Research & Innovation's 'Geometric Representation Theory and W-algebras' project and Heilbronn Institute initiatives.
His work explores advanced algebraic structures, including nilpotent slices, Yangians, and vertex algebras. Recent projects emphasize collaborations with international researchers, as seen in his contributions to the LMS-funded 'Distinguished Visiting Professor Jian-Yi Shi' program. Topley's research bridges pure mathematics and theoretical frameworks, addressing questions in algebraic geometry and modular forms.
His articles reflect a deep engagement with equivariant deformations, symplectic Lie algebras, and the interplay between algebraic groups and representation theory. Notable outputs include studies on Slodowy slices, modular affine vertex algebras, and smoothness of stabilisers in generic characteristics.
Funding highlights include £2.4M from UKRI (2025–2028) and multiple LMS grants supporting conferences and visiting scholars. His work is peer-reviewed and Open Access, with publications in top journals like Advances in Mathematics and the Quarterly Journal of Mathematics.
