Dr. Lewis C. Lawyer is an Assistant Professor and Director of the Native American Language Center at the University of California, Davis. He specializes in linguistics with a focus on Indigenous languages of California, particularly Patwin (Wintun). His work bridges language documentation, revitalization, and technology. He holds a Ph.D. in Linguistics (UC Davis, 2015), an M.A. (UC Davis, 2012), an M.Phil. in English and Applied Linguistics (University of Cambridge, 2006), and a B.A. in Linguistics and Music (University of Southern California, 2005).
Research interests include collaborative language revitalization, dictionary development, and language typology. He has led language programs for Indigenous communities like the Cachil Dehe Band of Wintun Indians and developed tools for accessing Patwin archival materials. His award-winning Ph.D. dissertation formed the basis of his 2021 book A Grammar of Patwin, and he co-authored the Cambridge English Thesaurus.
