Lew Klatt is a Professor in the English Department at Calvin University, known for his four poetry collections including Cloud of Ink (Iowa Poetry Prize) and Interloper (Juniper Prize). He has served as Poet Laureate of Grand Rapids (2014-2017) and was awarded the Presidential Award for Exemplary Teaching (2018) and an Artist Fellowship at The Hermitage (2020-2021).
- Education: BA in English (Wittenberg University, 1984), MDiv (Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, 1991), MA in Liberal Arts (St. John’s College, 1998), PhD in English (University of Georgia, 2003).
Klatt's research and creative work spans American poetry, Christian poetics, and literary criticism. His collaborations include MotionPoems, architectural photo essays in Detroit, and public art installations in Grand Rapids. Recent projects engage with the works of Flannery O'Connor and Wallace Stevens, reflecting his interest in theological and philosophical themes.
His publications in journals like The Southern Review and Poetry Daily explore intersections of creativity and spirituality. A forthcoming essay on Robert Frost in The Encounter (2021) and the manuscript Saint with a Peacock Voice (2020) further demonstrate his interdisciplinary approach.
