Leslie P. Choquette, Ph.D., is a Professor of History and the Côté Professor of French Studies at Assumption University, serving as Director of the French Institute. She holds a B.A. (History, 1978) and M.A. (History, 1981) from Radcliffe College and Harvard University, respectively, and a Ph.D. (History, 1988) from Harvard. Her research focuses on Canadian colonial history, social aspects of gender and ethnicity, and cultural perceptions of fear in early New France.
Choquette teaches courses such as France Since 1789, History of Canada, and Women in Europe. Her landmark book Frenchmen into Peasants (1997) won the Alfred Heggoy Book Prize and was translated into French. She has also contributed to journals like Historical Reflections and Québec Studies, exploring topics like prostitution in the French Third Republic and Franco-American identity.
Her editorial roles include serving as Editor of French Colonial History and Associate Editor for Social Sciences of Québec Studies. Her work bridges historical scholarship with cultural analysis, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to colonial and modern European studies.
