Lesley Wood is a Professor of Sociology at York University, affiliated with the Department of Sociology within the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies. She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from Columbia University, an M.Phil. in Sociology from Columbia, an M.Sc. in Economics from the London School of Economics, and a B.A. (Hons) in Sociology from Queen’s University.
Her research focuses on social movements, political sociology, and globalization, with particular attention to protest tactics, policing strategies, transnational solidarity, and the impact of repression on activism. She has explored themes such as deliberative democracy, civic engagement, and the militarization of policing through case studies like Toronto’s G20 protests and global justice movements.
Wood serves as North American Editor for Interface: A Journal For and About Social Movements and holds editorial roles at the Rose Series in Sociology (Russell Sage) and Pluto Press’s Engaged Studies in Social Movements. Her work bridges academic inquiry with engaged scholarship, emphasizing the practical implications of social movement dynamics.
Her recent publications analyze protest sustainability, the role of social media in documenting activism, and the evolving relationship between movements and state repression. Her research underscores the importance of understanding temporal strategies, transnational networks, and the socio-political contexts shaping contemporary activism.
