Lesley Abrams is a retired Professor of Early Medieval History affiliated with Balliol College, University of Oxford. Her research focuses on conversion to Christianity in early medieval Europe, particularly among the English and Scandinavians, and the broader Scandinavian world during the Viking Age. She employs interdisciplinary methods to study diaspora communities, integration, and material evidence such as place-names and stone sculptures.
Her work bridges cultural, religious, and political history, analyzing topics like Viking military activity, Church interactions, and the lived experiences of Scandinavians in overseas settlements. Recent studies include political baptism, religious practices of Viking armies, and the role of personal/place-names in historical understanding.
Publications include seminal articles on Viking diaspora and early Normandy, reflecting her expertise in comparative and regional history. While retired from formal teaching, she continues active research in these fields.
