Dr. Leonie Holthaus is a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Political Science, Technical University of Darmstadt, affiliated with the Chair for 'Transnational Governance'. She previously served as Acting Professor of International Politics at Potsdam University (2020) and holds a PhD from TU Darmstadt (summa cum laude) along with a State Examination from Philipps-University Marburg (High Distinction). Her work bridges political theory and empirical research, supported by visiting fellowships at Cambridge, Copenhagen, Queensland, and Aberystwyth universities.
Research Focus: Holthaus investigates democratization, international relations theory, and democracy promotion practices, with regional expertise in the Middle East, North Africa, and Gulf Monarchies. Her current projects analyze the historical evolution of democracy promotion and responses to disinformation, employing sociological and practice-theoretical frameworks. She has recently expanded into climate activism and emotional politics.
