Leonidas Oikonomakis is a Researcher at the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, holding a postdoctoral Marie Sklodowska Curie Individual Fellowship. He is affiliated with the Mobilities, Beliefs and Belonging (MOBB) research group and the Center on Social Movement Studies (COSMOS) at Scuola Normale Superiore. Previously, he held roles as a COFUND Marie Curie Junior Research Fellow at Durham University, Adjunct Lecturer at University of Crete, and lecturer at Hellenic Open University.
Educated at the European University Institute (PhD 2016), University of Manchester (MA 2006), and University of Piraeus (BA 2006), his research focuses on Latin American social movements, autonomy, revolutions, and the commons. He has authored Political Strategies and Social Movements in Latin America and contributed to peer-reviewed journals and edited volumes. His work spans ethnography of indigenous movements, resource extraction critiques, and visual protest studies.
Awarded the Marie Sklodowska Curie Fellowship, Oikonomakis' research also explores global south dynamics. He co-leads the FlyBAL project on Ecuadorian Amazon balsa extractivism. His media engagements include BBC, CNBC, and radio interviews on Latin American politics. He is also a rapper in Social Waste and co-founded ROAR Magazine.
