Leonid Berlyand is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Pennsylvania State University, affiliated with the Eberly College of Science. He holds a Ph.D. from Kharkov State University (1984). His research focuses on PDEs, variational problems, and their applications to biology and materials science, with recent work on mathematical foundations of Deep Learning and active matter systems.
He co-founded the Center for Mathematics of Living and Mimetic Matter (with Prof. I. Aronson) and the Center for Interdisciplinary Mathematics (with Prof. A. Bressan). Notable awards include the Humboldt Prize (2021) and the C.I. Noll Teaching Award (2004).
