Dr. Leo Frkanec is a distinguished academic and researcher at the Ruđer Bošković Institute, where he holds the position of Professor in the Division of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry. His primary affiliation is with the Laboratory for Biomolecular Interactions and Spectroscopy. Frkanec has an extensive academic background, including a Ph.D. from the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb (2000), and postdoctoral research at University College Dublin (2003-2004). His research focuses on supramolecular chemistry, self-assembly processes, molecular recognition, and the development of functional materials with biomedical applications.
- Education: B.Sc. (1986), M.Sc. (1991), Ph.D. (2000) from University of Zagreb.
- Research Interests: Organic gelators, calixarene derivatives, ion complexation, drug-delivery systems, and nanomaterials.
- Grants & Projects: Principal investigator in multiple Croatian Science Foundation and international projects (e.g., COST Actions on glyconanomaterials and complex chemical systems).
- Teaching: Lectures on medicinal chemistry and supramolecular chemistry at University of Rijeka and University of Zagreb.
Frkanec's work emphasizes the creation of advanced materials for biomedical uses, including hydrogels, ionogels, and liposomal systems. He has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications and contributed to textbooks on chemistry education. His recent studies explore photo-responsive gels, chiral gelators, and nanoparticle-based drug delivery.
