معرفی
Professor Leo Carlin is a leading researcher in leukocyte dynamics and cancer immunology at the Cancer Research UK Scotland Institute (formerly known as The Beatson Institute for Cancer Research). He serves as Group Leader and Head of the Beatson Advanced Imaging Resource (BAIR) since 2016. His research focuses on understanding how immune cells, particularly neutrophils, interact with the tumor microenvironment in cancer development and metastasis.
Professor Carlin received his BSc (Hons) in Immunology from University College London in 2000, followed by a PhD from Imperial College London in 2004 under the supervision of Dan Davis. He completed postdoctoral training at King's College London with Tony Ng (2005-2009) and Frédéric Geissmann (2009-2013), before becoming a Lecturer in Respiratory Science/Group Leader at Imperial College London (2013-2016).
His research employs advanced light microscopy in combination with flow cytometry, proteomics, and transcriptomics to investigate leukocyte dynamics in cancer. Key areas of interest include neutrophil biology, the pre-metastatic niche, immune cell regulation in tumor microenvironments, and developing imaging approaches to understand immune-tumor interactions.
Professor Carlin's laboratory has made significant contributions to understanding how neutrophils influence cancer progression and metastasis, particularly in breast cancer and lung adenocarcinoma. His team has published extensively in high-impact journals including Nature, EMBO Reports, and Nature Communications.
Professor Carlin mentors several PhD students and postdoctoral researchers, including Lindsey Arnott, Ryan Devlin, Désirée Zerbst, Ximena Raffo-Iraolagoitia, Demi Brownlie, Gemma Cairns, Qing Sun, and Mashidur Rana. His lab is part of the School of Cancer Sciences at the Cancer Research UK Scotland Institute in Glasgow.
