Lenore J. Cowen is a Professor in the Computer Science Department at Tufts University, with a courtesy appointment in the Mathematics Department. She holds a BA from Yale and a PhD in Mathematics from MIT. Her research spans Computational Biology, Algorithms, and Graph Theory, focusing on protein function prediction, network analysis, and structural bioinformatics. She leads the Tufts BCB group and collaborates on projects such as coral reef bioinformatics and synthetic biology. Awards include SIAM and ISCB fellowships, and mentoring recognitions like the CRA-E and NCWIT awards. Dr. Cowen teaches courses like Network Science and Advanced Algorithms, and advises students in interdisciplinary research. She has served on editorial boards of Bioinformatics and TCBB, and organizes conferences like RECOMB and SIAM ACDA.
- Education: PhD in Mathematics (MIT, 1993), BA in Mathematics (Yale, 1987)
- Research Interests: Protein interaction networks, diffusion state distances, coral holobiont omics, and algorithmic network propagation
- Grants: NSF Harnessing Data Revolution grants (T-Tripods and Synthetic Coral projects), NIH, and ONR funding
Her work bridges computational and biological sciences, with contributions to protein language models, disease module identification, and coral resilience studies. She actively mentors undergraduates and promotes diversity in computing through outreach programs.
