Lena Nilsson-Wikmar is a Professor at Karolinska Institutet, affiliated with the Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society. Her work focuses on physiotherapy, rehabilitation medicine, and musculoskeletal disorders, with particular expertise in spinal cord injury management, lymphedema, pelvic girdle pain, and obstetrics-related complications. She has contributed significantly to developing clinical guidelines and core outcome sets for conditions like pelvic girdle pain and breast cancer-related lymphedema.
Education and Leadership: Dr. Nilsson-Wikmar holds a doctoral degree in clinical medical science (2003) and has served as Program Director for the Master’s Program in Clinical Medical Science. She received the 2018 Pedagogical Prize from Karolinska Institutet for her contributions to educational leadership, emphasizing teaching method improvements and student learning outcomes.
Research Interests: Her research spans interdisciplinary topics including chronic pain management in spinal cord injury patients (with studies in South Africa and Rwanda), joint hypermobility assessment, and compression therapies for lymphedema. She actively collaborates internationally, addressing healthcare challenges in both high- and low-resource settings.
Publications: Over 60 peer-reviewed articles since 2001, with recent work focused on spinal cord injury epidemiology in Rwanda, compression sleeve efficacy in lymphedema, and core outcome sets for pelvic girdle pain. Her studies combine clinical trials, systematic reviews, and qualitative patient experiences.
