Lena Jonasson is Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Linköping University, Sweden. She is also a senior physician in cardiology and leads the Vascular Immunology research group within the Department of Health, Medicine and Caring Sciences and the Division of Diagnostics and Specialist Medicine. Her role integrates academic leadership, clinical practice, and advanced research in cardiovascular disease.
Her research interests center on translational cardiovascular immunology, particularly understanding immune system imbalances in coronary artery disease. Key areas include atherosclerosis, inflammation, NLRP3 inflammasome activation, immune cell regulation (especially regulatory T cells), and the interplay between metabolic risk factors and vascular health. She also contributes to research on public health aspects such as stress, socioeconomic factors, and health disparities.
The recent articles (2024–2025) reflect a strong focus on inflammatory mechanisms in chronic coronary syndrome, hemodynamic stress in aortic dilation using advanced 4D flow MRI, and biomarker discovery. Her work bridges molecular immunology, clinical cardiology, and population-based studies, often involving large collaborative projects like the Swedish CardioPulmonary BioImage Study.
Lena Jonasson actively mentors doctoral students and leads a research team, contributing to both education and scientific advancement. She is involved in major research networks such as CircM, which fosters collaboration between Linköping University and Region Östergötland.
