Leigh Evans, MD, is a Professor at the Yale School of Medicine within the Department of Emergency Medicine. As Section Chief of Medical Simulation and Executive Director of the Yale Center for Healthcare Simulation, she leads 20 faculty/staff in advancing simulation-based medical education.
- Medical Degree: Washington University School of Medicine (1990)
- Residency: Yale-New Haven Hospital (2002)
Her research focuses on simulation skill transfer to clinical practice, particularly in central venous catheter insertion and stress reduction during pandemics. Current work includes NIH-funded Yale Simulation Academy for New Haven high school students.
Recent publications (2024) span human factors engineering for hand hygiene, gender disparities in procedural confidence, and AI clinical decision support systems. Earlier work (2009-2010) established simulation training efficacy metrics for invasive procedures.
- Scientific Awards:
- Yale Medicine Distinguished Clinical Career Award (2024)
- ACEP National Emergency Medicine Faculty Teaching Award (2019)
- Alvan R. Feinstein Award (2015)
- Bohmfalk Teaching Prize (2008)
- Multiple Outstanding Teaching Awards in Emergency Medicine (2003, 2005)
She serves as Medical Simulation EM Fellowship Director and leads grants including AHRQ simulation training projects and the NIH R25 Science Education Partnerships Award. Her team explores telesimulation, wearable stress monitoring, and AI-augmented clinical systems through interdisciplinary collaborations with engineering and computer science departments.
