Leia Belt is a medical sociologist and DuBosian scholar working as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the HERE Lab. She employs interdisciplinary methodologies and data visualization techniques to examine structural racism in education and healthcare systems.
Her research focuses on the pervasive impact of structural racism within education and healthcare domains. Belt's recent work has illuminated significant correlations between Sundown towns (historical manifestations of racial violence and segregation) and adverse maternal and infant health outcomes. Through the Du Bois S.E.R.V.E. project, she explores Du Boisian approaches to research methodology, data visualization techniques, and inclusive STEM curriculum development.
Her work bridges sociology, public health, and data science to address systemic inequalities through innovative research methodologies that make structural racism visible through data representation.
Dr. Belt's research contributes to understanding how historical patterns of segregation continue to influence contemporary health disparities, particularly in maternal and infant outcomes.
