Lei Cao is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Mississippi, where he has been since 2002. He is affiliated with the College of Engineering and contributes to academic programs including the Ph.D. and M.S. in Engineering Science, and the B.S. in Electrical Engineering.

His research focuses on distributed detection in sensor networks, error control coding in communications, AI and deep learning for localization, and intelligent reflecting surfaces in 6G systems. He also works on wireless communications and applied probability modeling, with applications in sensor networks and communication optimization.
Lei Cao has secured research funding from agencies such as the National Science Foundation (NSF), NASA, Department of Transportation (DoT), Gulf Research Programs, and SMDC, as well as industry partnerships with Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories, C Spire, Raytheon, Decibel Research, and Harris. He serves as an Associate Editor for Networked Sensor Systems in the IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems.
