Leen Stougie

Leen Stougie is a Full Professor of Operations Research at the Vrije Universiteit (VU) Amsterdam and a Senior Researcher/Group Leader at Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) in the Life Sciences and Health (LSH) group. He has held academic positions at the University of Amsterdam (Assistant Professor, 1986), Technical University Eindhoven (Associate Professor, 1997–2008), and maintains a part-time professorship at VU since 2017.

His research spans combinatorial optimization and algorithm design, with a focus on complexity theory and optimization under uncertainty (stochastic programming, online optimization). Recent work emphasizes scheduling and computational biology applications, including enumeration problems in metabolic networks, phylogenetic trees, and metagenomic graph analysis.

Stougie collaborates extensively, including as a team member of the INRIA-ERABLE group and in partnerships with Maastricht University (UM) and Delft University of Technology (TUD). He has contributed to interdisciplinary projects linking operations research with life sciences and logistics.
