Leah Krubitzer is a Professor at the University of California, Davis, affiliated with the Center for Neuroscience and the Department of Psychology. She leads the Laboratory of Evolutionary Neurobiology, focusing on how complex brains evolved from simpler forms. Her research explores cortical evolution, neuroplasticity, and the relationship between brain structure and function across mammals.
Education: Ph.D. in Psychology (Neuroscience) from Vanderbilt University (1989), B.S. in Speech Pathology from Pennsylvania State University (1983).
Research Interests: Dr. Krubitzer investigates the anatomical and electrophysiological basis of cortical evolution, particularly in sensory and motor systems. She examines how environmental and genetic factors shape brain organization, using comparative studies across species like opossums, primates, and bats. Her work highlights the interplay between evolution and development in shaping cortical specializations.
Publications: Over 150 peer-reviewed articles, including seminal works on cortical plasticity, parietal cortex evolution, and cross-modal reorganization in visually impaired mammals. Recent studies focus on tool use in primates and the effects of early sensory deprivation on brain structure.
