Lea Leppik is an Associate Professor in Legal History at the University of Tartu's Faculty of Social Sciences, School of Law, and serves as Curator at the University of Tartu Museum. She holds a Doctorate in Social History from the University of Tartu (2006), focusing on social mobility of university staff in the Tsarist era. Her career includes roles as Research Director of the University Museums (2010–2018) and leadership positions in academic programs like Document Management and Journalism Studies.
Research interests span social history, history of science, legal history, and biographies. Notable work includes studies on the Struve Geodetic Arc, Tartu Observatory instruments, and 19th-century academic careers. She has published over 180 works and edited several collections like Tartu Ülikooli ajaloo küsimusi.
Awards include the Estonian Museum Award (2017) and Science Communication Prize (2011). She leads projects like enhancing visibility of university history publications and mapping historical collections. Current roles combine academic teaching with museum curation and editorial leadership in journals like Forschungen zur baltischen Geschichte.
