LeAnn Whitney

LeAnn Whitney serves as an Associate Professor of Oceanography in the Corning School of Ocean Studies at Maine Maritime Academy, where she has been a faculty member since 2018. Her office is located in Dirigo House, and she teaches Introduction to Marine Science (OS101) and a departmental seminar (OS002), with office hours held both in-office and at the library.

Her educational background includes:

• B.S. in Marine Science from the University of Maine (Orono)

Dr. Whitney is a marine phytoplankton ecologist specializing in cellular mechanisms that enable phytoplankton survival in nutrient-poor environments. Her research integrates phytoplankton culturing experiments with molecular analyses and physiological measurements to characterize cellular responses to nutrient deficiency, particularly focusing on bridging laboratory findings with environmental observations of marine microorganisms. This work addresses fundamental questions about ocean carbon cycling and oxygen production, as phytoplankton generate nearly half the Earth's oxygen.

Her publication record demonstrates consistent expertise in nutrient limitation responses, with recent work emphasizing phosphonate utilization and phosphorus stress in eukaryotic phytoplankton. The research spans molecular mechanisms to ecosystem-level impacts, frequently examining diatom species like Thalassiosira in Pacific Ocean environments.
