Lawrence Stomberg is a Professor of Cello and Associate Director for Performance Studies at the University of Delaware's School of Music, part of the College of Arts & Sciences. He joined the faculty in 2004 and is a member of the Philadelphia-based Halcyon Consort. Previously, he served as cellist of the Serafin String Quartet for 13 years. His career spans solo performances, chamber music, and community outreach, including the Bach in Wilmington project pairing Bach's cello suites with community narratives. He teaches cello and chamber music, giving masterclasses nationally and internationally.
Stomberg's research interests include classical performance traditions and contemporary compositions. He recorded works by composers like Jennifer Higdon and Kirk O’Riordan, featured on Naxos and other labels. Awards include the 2018 Delaware Established Artist Fellowship. He collaborates with ensembles such as the Serafin Ensemble and performs across four continents. His work emphasizes both historical and modern repertoire, including premieres of new works.
Teaching and performance are central to his career, with active engagement in community programs like Ankos Films' video series. He also co-leads outreach initiatives in Wilmington, connecting music with local voices through commissioned pieces.
