Dr. Lawrence Lash is a Professor of Pharmacology at Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan. With a career spanning nearly four decades, his work focuses on renal toxicology, specifically mechanisms of chemical-induced kidney injury and biomarker development.
- PhD in Biochemistry (Emory University, 1985)
- Postdoc in Pharmacology & Toxicology (University of Rochester, 1985-1986)
- Wayne State faculty since 1988 (Assistant → Associate → Full Professor)
Research highlights include discovery of the sodium-coupled GSH transporter in renal membranes, characterization of mitochondrial targets for halogenated solvents, and development of human proximal tubular cell models for drug toxicity screening. Current work explores mitochondrial proteomics and lipidomics as early biomarkers for environmental and pharmacologic nephrotoxicity.
His laboratory utilizes in vitro systems (primary human/rat proximal tubular cells) and in vivo models to study:
- Sex- and species-specific differences in toxicant metabolism
- Role of mitochondrial carriers (DIC, OGC) in GSH transport
- Adaptive changes in diabetes-related renal stress
Dr. Lash serves editorial roles at Toxicology Reports (Founding Editor-in-Chief) and Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology, and contributes to U.S. EPA advisory committees. He teaches graduate courses including Advanced Topics in Pharmacology and Principles of Toxicology.
