His primary areas of interest include Old Testament Studies, Cultural Evolution, Biblical Studies, and the study of Ancient Near Eastern religions, particularly examining concepts like the Divine Council through evolutionary frameworks. His work bridges traditional theological scholarship with cognitive science, exploring how religious ideas transmit and evolve across cultures.
His scholarly output reveals a strong interdisciplinary trajectory, with recent publications examining ancient religious texts through cognitive and evolutionary lenses. His 2024 doctoral thesis The Divine Council in Light of Cultural Evolution represents a significant contribution to understanding how evolutionary theory can inform ancient Near Eastern religious studies. His research demonstrates increasing influence in cognitive approaches to religious phenomena in ancient contexts.
Laine actively participates in major research initiatives, including the Centre of Excellence in Ancient Near Eastern Empires (2018-2025) and Team 2: Social Scientific Theory and Applications. These projects employ interdisciplinary methodologies to analyze ancient empires and religious traditions, with Laine contributing expertise in cognitive approaches to religious evolution. His upcoming presentation scheduled for June 2025 indicates continued scholarly productivity and engagement with cutting-edge theoretical frameworks in the field.
