معرفی
Laurent Gilles is a Research Professor and Director at the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research in Frankfurt, Germany. He previously held the Lawrence A. Hanson Chair as Professor of Biology and Computation & Neural Systems at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) from 1990 to 2011. His research integrates cellular, systems, and computational neuroscience, focusing on olfactory coding, visual perception, sleep mechanisms, and the evolution of cortical and hippocampal structures. He has conducted studies across diverse species, including insects, cuttlefish, reptiles, and mammals.
Education: Studied veterinary medicine and neuroethology in Toulouse, France, followed by postdoctoral research at the University of Cambridge as a Royal Society Locke Research Fellow. He later joined Caltech’s faculty, advancing from Assistant to Professor rank before moving to the Max Planck Institute in 2009.
- Key Research Themes: Sleep architecture, neural oscillations, olfactory coding, and evolutionary neurobiology.
- Notable Achievements: Over 90 research papers, ERC Advanced Investigator Grant (2013–2018), and mentorship of prominent scientists now at institutions like Princeton and Harvard.
Awards include EMBO membership (2014), AAAS Fellowship (2001), and multiple teaching and research fellowships. His lab has pioneered studies on neural circuits in diverse organisms, emphasizing cross-species comparisons to understand fundamental brain functions.
