Laurence Duchien is Full Professor at University of Lille since 2001 and current Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology (since July 2022). She belongs to the Computer Science Department and conducts research at CRIStAL Lab within the Spirals group, a joint Inria-University of Lille entity.
Her educational background includes:
- PhD in Computer Science from University Pierre & Marie Curie (1988)
- Qualification to Supervise Research (HDR) from University of Joseph Fourier (1999)
Professor Duchien's research centers on software engineering with three core themes: distributed software architectures, maintenance/evolution processes, and variability in sensitive systems. Her recent work focuses on lifecycle adaptation from design to runtime, particularly in cloud computing and mobile application contexts, driving innovations in dynamic reconfiguration and traceability for critical systems.
Her scientific recognition includes:
- Knight of the French National Order of Merit (2019)
She has advised 25 PhD students (including Zeinab Abou Khalil, Marc Sango, Salman Farhat, and Gustavo Cipriano Mota Sousa) and served as reviewer for over 90 theses. Her research funding spans major European projects (FP6 NoE AOSD, FP7 IP PaaSage) and French initiatives (ANR FAROS, MOANO; FUI Cappuccino, EconHome), with industry collaborations via CIFRE contracts with Norsys and Orange.
As leader of the Spirals research group, she directs work on software product lines and adaptive systems within CRIStAL Lab, emphasizing real-world applications in railway systems and multi-cloud environments.
